Blogworthy: Women Painting Women
In 2009, when artists Sadie Valeri, Alia El-Bermani, and Diane Feissel saw the dearth of reliable sources for contemporary portraits of women, by women, they established the blog Women Painting Women. Now, bolstered by the blog’s widespread popularity, Sag Harbor’s Richard J. Demato Fine Arts Gallery will host an exhibition of the same name, focused on the unique and diverse relationship between contemporary female artists and their subjects.
At right, Victoria Selbach’s Mary 4 is a dark study of the titular woman, solemn and nude, introverted and fading into shadows. In contrast, Pam Hawke’s metal-based Cocoon glows as its meditative, redheaded subject stands with eyes closed, adorned with a scarf surrounding her like armor.
Here is a show strictly curated to raise awareness of an underrepresented and deserving focus, and yet at the same time serving to undermine such simple categorization.
“Women Painting Women” is on view at Richard J. Demato Fine Arts Gallery from September 21st through October 25th, 2013.
