Follow Friday: Five São Paulo Galleries Put on a Show at ArtRio 2014
With ArtRio 2014 in full swing from now through the weekend, we bring you five Brazilian exhibitors that are showcasing a diverse range of renowned international artists and emerging Brazilian talent at the fair.
Founded in 1989, this São Paulo-based gallery focuses on promoting art from the 1960s through today. Galeria Nara Roesler juxtaposes modern works with contemporary counterparts in its exhibitions. In 2012, the gallery added Vik Muniz and Isaac Julien to its roster, doubled its exhibition space, and resumed a curatorial program with Roesler Hotel. The gallery showcases Julio Le Parc, Lucia Koch, Cao Guimarães, Brígida Baltar, Antonio Dias, and Marco Maggi at its ArtRio 2014 booth.
Based in São Paulo, Casa Triângulo is a contemporary art gallery that focuses on fostering the careers of Brazilian artists. The gallery encourages its artists to experiment with exhibitions of institutional scale within its space. At ArtRio 2014, Casa Triângulo exhibits works by various artists from its roster, including an architectural sculpture by Daniel Acosta. The work, Multifunktionalcosmocave (2006), is a multi-shelved unit featuring a lounge area—typical of his functional structures built to incorporate various purposes, such as sitting, reading, working, or storing items.
Representing new contemporary art in Brazil, Zipper Galeria showcases artists working in a range of media, from photography and video to painting and sculpture. Gallerist Fabio Cimino, who first began his career in the art market in 1983, works closely with his represented artists to help them develop and launch their careers. At ArtRio 2014, Zipper Galeria exhibits the wooden sculptures of Camille Kachani, Adriana Duque’s photographs imitating stoic Old Master portraits, and mixed-media works by street artist Zezão.
Directed by Spanish native Maria Baró, the gallery boasts 1,500 square meters of exhibition space in a renovated warehouse in the neighborhood of Santa Cecília. Baró Galeria focuses on encouraging site-specific works and curatorial projects, with emphasis on artists from the 1970s and ’80s, including David Medalla, Roberto Jacoby, and Felipe Ehrenberg. The gallery also supports emerging artists with a residency program that has included Zhanna Kadyrova, Ramonn Vieitez, and Felippe Moraes, among others.
Galeria Marilia Razuk, São Paulo, Brazil
This São Paulo-based gallery specializes in the work of both emerging and established artists. In 2010, the gallery expanded to include another exhibition space on the same street as its original location, providing more room to highlight a diverse roster of artists working in various media. At its ArtRio 2014 booth, Galeria Marilia Razuk will feature an array of sculptures, paintings, photographs, and new media.
