The Artsy Guide to CHART
Now in its second edition, CHART offers a unique showcase of contemporary art from galleries across Scandinavia. With a range of international established and emerging artists, and a program brimming with talks and performances, the fair is sure to captivate the Copenhagen art scene. This fair features everything from performances by Sophie Dupont, to an architecture competition between rising talent from local universities, to special projects and coinciding museum exhibitions, including Olafur Eliasson’s installation at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art.
1. When and where?
CHART takes place from August 29th–31st at Kunsthal Charlottenborg, Nyhavn 2, 1051 Copenhagen, Denmark. Admission can be purchased at the fair.
2. Why visit?
As the only fair in Denmark to focus solely on contemporary art, CHART is a unique place to take the temperature of the gallery scene in the Nordic region. The fair is founded on a sense of collaboration, where all participating galleries are asked to unite efforts to strengthen Scandinavia’s presence in the international art market. The fair commissions site-specific works as well as a competition for young architects to create an installation in its courtyard.
3. What kinds of work can I expect to see?
The fair showcases contemporary art from 27 galleries across the Scandinavian region. While there is a strong showing of work by Nordic artists, there are also works by European, American, and Asian artists. Mediums include films, installations, painting, sculpture, and photography. A range of both emerging and established artists are presented at the fair, including Olafur Eliasson, Antony Gormley, Tal R, Alexander Tovborg, Jeppe Hein, Elizabeth Peyton, and Mari Sunna.
4. How is the fair organized?
CHART’s program features 27 galleries, along with ongoing talks, performances, and special projects.
Talks
The Talks program will feature a number of notable curators and artists for a talk on the theme “Art and its Publics,” which will discuss the challenges and highlights of bringing art to the public and working in the art world. The speakers include Esa Nickle (Producing Director, Performa), Helga Just Christoffersen (Assistant Curator at New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York), Yuko Hasegawa (Chief Curator of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo and Curator of the Sharjah Biennial 11), Elmgreen & Dragset, John Køner, and Lars Cuzner and Fadlabi, who will discuss their controversial “human zoo reenactment,” in Oslo.
Performances
Performances will take place across all three days of the fair and will include works by Sophie Dupont, Dorit Chrysler, Matthew Stone, Rahman Hak-Hagir, and Lilibeth Cuenca-Rasmussen. See the schedule below:

Special Projects
The Special Projects section will display large-scale works and installations throughout the grounds of the fair.
5. Opening Night
On the opening night, CHART invites the public to a party hosted in the Charlottenborg courtyard. There will be a live music line-up of bands from the Danish music scene and a pop-up street kitchen with six gourmet food stalls from L’Esprit du Vin, Che Fe/Era Ora, Atelier September, Pluto, Condesa, and Soren K.
6. Courtyard Competition
An architectural competition will take place in the courtyard through the duration of the fair. CHART has chosen seven teams of up-and-coming architecture students and recent graduates from The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Architecture and Aarhus School of Architecture to design, develop, and construct one pavilion that will be located in the main entrance of the Charlottenborg courtyard. Each team has been assigned one company to work with to design a booth to showcase their products. The supporting organizations include CHART Bar partnered with Absolut Vodka, Restaurant Pluto partnered with L’Esprit du Vin, Restaurant Søren K partnered with L’Esprit du Vin, Atelier September, CHÉ FÈ, Condessa Bar and Spiseri, and DR Press, Radio and TV.
7. Museum Shows
Olafur Eliasson’s solo exhibition at the Louisiana Museum of Modern art, titled “Riverbed,” fills the entire South Wing of the museum with a giant landscape installation. The exhibition debuts on August 20th and is on view through January 4th, 2015.
“Abandon the Parents,” an exhibition curated by Danish artist Henrik Olesen, Daniel Buchholz, and Christopher Müller, is on display at the SMK National Gallery of Denmark through September 28th, 2014.
