The Artsy Guide to the Dallas Art Fair
Now in its sixth edition, the Dallas Art Fair returns to the city’s burgeoning arts district with over 90 top international galleries and an extensive Dallas Arts Week agenda. John Sughrue, co-founder of the fair says it best: “It is a testament to our city’s institutions and collectors that the Dallas Art Fair has become the locus of a wealth of cultural activity each spring.”
When? Where? How?
The fair takes place April 10th–13th at the Fashion Industry Gallery (f.i.g.). located in Dallas’s Downtown Arts District (1807 Ross Avenue, Dallas, TX 75201). Tickets may be purchase online, here.
Why visit?
In the midst of Dallas’s meteoric rise as an American art capital, Dallas Art Fair is an opportunity to experience the best of the local Texas art scene, alongside offerings from an international array of leading modern and contemporary art galleries. The fair’s presentations will run the gamut, including emerging and established artists, and ranging in media from painting, sculpture, and works-on-paper, to photography, video art, and installation.
Preview Gala Benefit
To kick off the fair, on the evening of April 10th a gala will benefit three of the city’s highly esteemed art institutions—Dallas Contemporary, Nasher Sculpture Center, and Dallas Museum of Art. Attendees are given the opportunity to preview the fair, while celebrating these vital art centers.
Dallas Arts District
The Dallas Arts District, where the fair takes place, is an ever-growing art destination spanning 68 acres of the city’s downtown area, which has become a vibrant beacon of cultural events and educational initiatives. Among its numerous acclaimed arts and cultural venues and landmarks are Dallas Museum of Art, Nasher Sculpture Center, The Annette Strauss Artist Square, Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, Dallas Theater Center/Arts District Theater, Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center, and the Trammell & Margaret Crow Collection of Asian Art.
Dallas Arts Week
In tandem with the fair, an extensive agenda of art world events and activities are planned for the week leading up to and through the fair, at venues around the city. Between artists talks by Julian Schnabel and Richard Phillips, museum openings, a festive Artists’ Parade, panel discussions, and tours of private collections, the week is brimming with fantastic programming. Local Museum Exhibition Highlights
While in town, visitors should catch some notable museum exhibitions running concurrently; highlights include: Bettina Pousttchi and David Bates at the Nasher Sculpture Center; Robert Smithson and “Nur: Light in Art and Science from the Islamic World” at Dallas Museum of Art; Julian Schnabel, Richard Phillips, and Paula Crown at Dallas Contemporary; and Fredrik Vaerslev at The Power Station.
