My Highlights from Art Toronto 2014
I don’t consciously pick a style of artist and yet when all the pieces come together an overall feeling emerges. I am more visceral in my choices and I trust my instincts—I also find that if you expose yourself to great art enough it helps develop your eye and you can better judge when a piece holds up.
My Selection:
Ron Eady, Papoose, 2014, at AREA Gallery
There is a haunting aspect to Ron's work—very painterly.
Marcel Barbeau, Untitled, 1957, at Canadian Fine Arts
I love graphic black and white paintings.
Angela Teng, Banger, 2014, at Wil Aballe Art Projects | WAAP
Interesting use of mixed media.
Jean-Paul Riopelle, Le Chant de l'Alouette, 1955, at Canadian Fine Arts
Powerful abstract expressionist painter. Love the use of colour and application of the paint in a sculptural way. Lots of energy—great Canadian artist.
Robert Taite, 30.5" x 29.5"-5.5" x 7", 4" x 11", 2014, at Actual
Sculptural painting—I like that it is dimensional.
Marcel Dzama, Untitled (Trees), circa. 1999, at Galerie BAC
I like the humour in Marcel Dzama’s work.
