About miart 2019

Milan, 22 January 2019 – The days from 5 to 7 April 2019 see the return of miart, the international fair of modern and contemporary art organised by Fiera Milano and directed by Alessandro Rabottini, with the support of Intesa Sanpaolo as main partner. Inside pavilion 3 of fieramilanocity, 186 galleries from 19 countries will be exhibiting works by modern masters, established and emerging contemporary artists, and celebrated historical and experimental designers.

By confirming its seven sections, miart reaffirms its role as the Italian fair with the widest chronological range of works, thus reflecting Milan’s intrinsic combination of history and experimentation. The international dimension that in recent years has made Lombardy’s leading city such an inclusive capital is expressed to perfection in miart’s characteristic dialogue between past and present. In 2019, miart sets out to consolidate its growth by combining market solidity with research, thus broadening its scope and becoming an observatory on society and social changes.

miart 2019 is pleased to welcome some prestigious international galleries which, for the first time, have chosen Milan as their window on Italy. These include Cabinet (London), Corvi-Mora (London), Marian Goodman Gallery (New York – Paris – London), Hauser & Wirth (Hong Kong – London – Los Angeles – New York – Somerset – St. Moritz – Gstdaad – Zurich), Herald St (London), Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac (Paris – London – Salzburg) and Tucci Russo (Torre Pellice).

One of the mainstays of miart’s architecture is its central focus on the art of the last century, and this is confirmed by a wide-ranging selection of galleries such as Cardi (Milan – London), Casoli De Luca (Rome), Cortesi (Lugano – London – Milan), Galleria dello Scudo (Verona), Mazzoleni (London – Turin), Montrasio Arte (Monza – Milan), Repetto Gallery (London), Robilant + Voena (London – Milan – St. Moritz), Richard Saltoun (London), Gian Enzo Sperone (Sent – New York), Studio Marconi (Milan), Tega (Milan) and Tornabuoni Arte (Florence– Milan – Paris – London).

18 international museum directors and curators of prestigious institutions from 10 countries will be awarding the Fondazione Fiera Milano acquisition fund and the 5 prizes that miart has conceived for galleries and artists, now a testimony to the many years of collaboration between the fair and its partners: the Fondazione Fiera Milano Acquisition Fund, the Herno Prize, the Fidenza Village Prize for Generations, the On Demand Prize by Snaporazverein, the LCA Prize for Emergent, and the Rotary Club Milano Brera Prize for Contemporary Art and Young Artists.

A new series of miartalks will once again confirm the collaboration between miart and In Between Art Film: three days of conversations open to the public involving forty artists, curators, collectors, designers, museum directors and international thinkers, all coming together around the theme of “The Common Good”.

miart’s mission to inform is again expressed in miarteducational, the free guided tour service made possible by the support of Fidenza Village and Value Retail.

As is now a tradition, miart will be the epicentre of Milan Art Week, a packed calendar of openings, events and special exhibitions and projects organised by the leading public institutions and private foundations in Milan, including (among others) Sheela Gowda and Giorgio Andreotta Calò at Pirelli HangarBicocca, Lizzie Fitch / Ryan Trecartin at Fondazione Prada Milano, Anna Maria Maiolino at the PAC Padiglione d’Arte Contemporanea, Broken Nature. Design Takes on Human Survival + Design Museum at the Triennale, Lygia Pape at the Fondazione Carriero, Antonello da Messina and Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres at the Palazzo Reale, Renata Boero and Marinella Pirelli at the Museo del Novecento, The Unexpected Subject: 1978 Art and Feminism in Italy at FM – Centro per l’Arte Contemporanea, Sophia Al Maria at the Fondazione Pomodoro, Hans Josephsohn at ICA Milano, Carlos Amorales at the Fondazione Pini, Anj Smith at the Museo Poldi Pezzoli, and a new special project commissioned by the Fondazione Nicola Trussardi.

Underlining the richness and vitality of the programme lined up for miart, the art week will conclude with a special opening of Milan's private galleries on Sunday 7 April.
