Bill Cunningham: Facades
New-York Historical Society
Photographs by Bill Cunningham illuminate how fashion, architecture and history have always been vital to New York City's soul. In 1968, when few were seeking beauty on New York City’s streets, Bill Cunningham started his Facades project “just for the fun of it.” Scouting out locations on his omnipresent bicycle, he grabbed his camera and his friend Editta Sherman, dressed her in period clothing, and photographed the city’s architecture in images that suggested the distant past, even as the streetscape itself struggled with an uncertain present.
Bill Cunningham: Facades will be on view at the New-York Historical Society from March 14, 2014 - June 15, 2014
