“This Art Is Your Art” Competition
THE CHALLENGE
The White House Historical Association, Artsy, and the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation have joined together to launch the “This Art Is Your Art” Competition. This is an unprecedented opportunity for university students in the United States to engage with the artwork in our country’s home—the White House—by creating a short video about the historical and artistic context of one particular work in the White House. The five winners will receive a trip to Washington, D.C. and have their videos shown at the White House Historical Association this summer.
SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS
- Create an Artsy account
- Review the White House Historical Association Collection on Artsy
- Select one piece of artwork and create a short (up to 3 min. in length) video about your chosen work, responding to one of the 6 questions provided below
- Upload your video to YouTube as a publicly available link
- Submit an application form, including the YouTube link
- Optional: Share your submission via social media! Tag @Artsy, @RRFoundation, @WhiteHouseHistory (Facebook and Instagram) / @WhiteHouseHstry (Twitter), and use the hashtag #ThisArtIsYourArtContest
QUESTIONS
Please address one of these questions in your video response:
- What does this work reveal about its time, and what does it reveal about America today?
- Connect this painting to another work in a different medium. (Consider thinking broadly! Literature, music, architecture, film, dance…)
- Does this artist, this painting, or its subject matter challenge conventions? Why or why not?
- How does this work speak to a personal experience?
- Create a story describing what happened just before or just after the moment reflected in this painting.
- Why do you think it is important that this work is in the White House Collection?
REQUIREMENTS
Your video should focus on a work in the White House collection, selected from choices on Artsy’s site. The video must respond to one or more of the Questions specified in the instructions provided, and be uploaded to YouTube as a publicly accessible video. Participants are encouraged to make unexpected connections that ponder new lines of reflection that surprise and delight. Entries should be innovative and creative in their approach.
AWARDS
Each winner will:
- Have his/her submission video on view at the White House Historical Association
- Receive a certificate of congratulations signed by each of the judges
- Have his/her submission video shared on the Artsy website and via social media
- Attend a ceremony in Washington D.C. Round trip travel and accommodations will be provided.

ELIGIBILITY
The competition is open only to undergraduate students, graduate students, and post-doctoral fellows who are at least eighteen (18) years old, and are affiliated with an accredited college or university in the United States of America, and based in the United States of America and who would be able to travel to Washington D.C. to attend a ceremony in July or September.
