Liz Nowell is Director of the Institute of Modern Art, Brisbane. Established in 1975, the IMA is Australia’s longest running contemporary art space and one of the Asia-Pacific’s most important forums for critical discourse and visual culture. Over the past decade, Liz has curated dozens of exhibitions including Missile Park: Yhonnie Scarce (co-curator, 2021, IMA, Brisbane and ACCA, Melbourne) Invisible Border: Khadim Ali (2021, IMA, Brisbane and UNSW Galleries, Sydney); CREATURE: Marianna Simnett (co-curator, 2020, IMA, Brisbane and City Gallery Wellington); Next Matriarch, co-curated with Kimberley Moulton (2017, ACE Open, Adelaide and Koori Heritage Trust, Melbourne); putsch: proppaNOW (2010, Adelaide Festival) and The Violet Ballet, Sally Smart (2019, ACE Open, Adelaide). Previously, she was founding Director of ACE Open, Adelaide and Executive Director of Contemporary Art Centre of SA.

From the unexpected to the offbeat, and from emerging to established, these work embody the spirit of one my favourite art fairs – Spring 1883. This selection captures the exuberance, breadth and distinctive quality of contemporary art in Australia.
