Fair Programming, Special Projects,Books & Editions, and Additional Partnershipsfor the Fourth Edition of UNTITLED, ART San Francisco

UNTITLED, ART is pleased to announce a diverse public program of performances, workshops, and conversations for the fourth edition of UNTITLED, ART San Francisco. In addition, the fair will feature Special Projects by participating galleries, the return of the Books & Editions section after its 2019 debut, and a number of additional partnerships, including Withersworldwide, the presenting partner of conversations held in the Podcast Lounge. The fair will take place for the second consecutive year at San Francisco’s historic Pier 35 on The Embarcadero, from January 17–19, 2020, with artwork available by modern and contemporary artists presented by an international roster of galleries and nonprofit foundations.

“As we developed the programming for the fourth edition of UNTITLED, ART San Francisco, we wanted to think strategically about how we could simultaneously speak on issues relevant at a micro level to the Bay Area art community, while also thinking on a macro level about topics connected to the global art world,” said Executive Director, Manuela Mozo. “These topics range from the changing urban landscape in the Bay Area to the global effects of climate change. Our series of Special Projects, Podcast Lounge conversations, and other programs creates a dynamic dialogue that addresses important contemporary issues.”

Fair Programming

The program of Podcast Lounge conversations at UNTITLED, ART San Francisco brings together a diverse group of artists, architects, curators, and academics. Each conversation is recorded live in front of an audience in the fair’s Podcast Lounge and will be distributed as a podcast following the fair. The program’s lead moderator will be James Voorhies, Chair of the Graduate Program in Curatorial Practice at the California College of the Arts.

For Friday and Sunday, Associate Partner Facebook has organized conversations connected to their fair activation, with speakers that include artist Kira Dominguez Hultgren, Charlie Sutton, Head of Design for the Facebook App, and Kelly Sicat, Lucas Artists Residency Program Director at Montalvo Arts Center.

On Friday evening, January 17, Mike Henderson — accomplished musician and Bay Area artist included in Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power 1963–1983 at the de Young Museum — will perform a special musical set highlighting the influence of blues music on African American artists from the 1960s to 1980s. The performance will take place in the fair’s Performance Space across from the Michael Rosenfeld Gallery booth presentation featuring artists also included in Soul of a Nation.

For Saturday, January 18, ArtTable has organized a conversation with Bay Area artists Indira Allegra, Erica Deeman, and Katherine Vetne, and Withersworldwide will bring together a panel of experts to discuss methods and tips for new collectors building their art collection, with topics that range from current market trends and art financing to conservation and art insurance.

Also on Saturday, Bay Area nonprofit Creativity Explored will hold a special art-making workshop for families. Participants will have the opportunity to create original fiber art with the help of contemporary Bay Area artist Ana Teresa Fernández, represented by participating exhibitor Gallery Wendi Norris (children under 12 receive free admission to the fair).

Closing the program of conversations in the Podcast Lounge on Sunday afternoon, January 19, artist Oxossi Ayofemi and architect Bonnie Bridges of Studio BBA will speak about their collaboration on COMMONS — a café and gathering space built for live performances, set to open in downtown Oakland in 2020.

Special Projects

Integrated throughout the fair, Special Projects are presented by participating galleries at UNTITLED, ART San Francisco 2020. Catharine Clark Gallery, San Francisco, will present Flood by Deborah Oropallo and Andy Rappaport. The three-channel video piece will greet fairgoers as they enter Pier 35 with images, both stunningly beautiful and hauntingly unsettling, of amassing crowds as they struggle to escape rising waters and environmental disasters around the world. Dolby Chadwick Gallery, San Francisco, will present a single large-scale sculpture by the seminal 20th-century Bay Area artist Stephen De Staebler; the gallery’s booth will also feature additional works by De Staebler, figurative paintings by Terry St. John, and etchings by Frank Lobdell. Max Estrella, Madrid, will present a body of work by Val del Omar, one of Spain’s most important experimental filmmakers.

Night Gallery, Los Angeles, will complement their solo booth of new works by JPW3 (aka John Patrick Walsh III) with a project of “movable sculptures.” The artist will create vegetable gardens in three shopping carts and make juice out of the vegetables during the fair’s VIP and Press Preview. These works extend JPW3’s practice of reinventing items scavenged from urban wastelands, and when “activated” during the juice-making process, the sculptures become sites of sustenance and communal interaction.

Books & Editions

After its 2019 debut, the Books & Editions section will return to UNTITLED, ART San Francisco. The section will feature six different publishers from six different cities. From the Bay Area, RITE Editions, San Francisco, will return to the section with a new special edition by Gabriel Sierra, while newcomer TBW Books, Oakland, will join with a series of photography monographs and special editions. Morel Books, London, will also join the fair for the first time, as will Familia Editions, New York, KultProekt Gallery, Moscow, and Dilalica, Barcelona, which will present a special edition titled Cielo, produced in collaboration with photographers Ángela Losa and María Eugenia Serrano and Catalan writer Ruben Pujol.

Additional Partnerships

In addition to previously announced fair partners, including Facebook, eBay, and Hagerty®, several new strategic partnerships have been established for the fourth edition of UNTITLED, ART San Francisco. These companies align with the ethos of UNTITLED, ART San Francisco in producing a high-quality product and/or experience, as well as demonstrating a commitment to the Bay Area community.

The fourth edition of UNTITLED, ART San Francisco will feature a new Podcast Lounge, presented by Inside Weather, an online furniture retailer headquartered in the Bay Area. The Podcast Lounge will be outfitted by Inside Weather’s latest designs and products and will host a series of podcast conversations recorded live in front of an audience. This program of conversations will be presented by Withersworldwide, an international law firm with offices in San Francisco and a prominent art law practice.

UNTITLED, ART San Francisco will also partner with local Bay Area artisan brands, including modular fine-jewelry brand Limnia, handmade ceramics studio MMclay, and Japanese arts and crafts retailer Playmountain EAST.

In addition, Paradyme Investments, a global private equity firm with offices in the United States and Europe, will be the presenting partner of the UNTITLED, ART San Francisco VIP After Party.
