OUR TOP-5 HIGHLIGHTS
Whether he is the all American patriot, Robert Longo's Old Glory, Left Side, 2011 edition makes a great present. Looking at this print, you can feel the breeze blowing and trace the movement of the flag's fabric. Longo skillfully creates movement to two-dimensionality. This work explores the meaning of power and identity through the stars and stripes of the American flag.
Koons's Pin-Up girl or as titled here Girl with Lobster, 2009 featuring Gretchen Mol, the star of The Notorious Bettie Page, is placed beside the iconic lobster inflatable with a reflective silver line drawing in the foreground referencing fertility, Mother Nature, and the painting The Origin of the World by Gustave Courbet. Koons´s Girl with Lobster is a commentary on contemporary culture, while being playful, erotic, and at the same time innocent and vulgar.
For the cinema appreciator father, we have Andy Warhol´s Platinum: Elvis (published by Rosenthal studio-line in collaboration with The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts INC., New York) portraying the King of Pop dressed up as a cowboy with a gun in hand - a still from Flaming Star (1960). One can cherish the success this series has had as the painting Double Elvis (1963) hangs in the Museum of Modern Art, New York and a Double Elvis (Ferus Type), 1963 sold last year at Christie's for $53 million.
Damien Hirst's "Spots" are a classic depiction of contemporary art taste and they are experiencing a strong comeback and value appreciation. An edition from Carvacrol (edition of 150) sold this April for $17,500 at Sotheby´s (from an estimate of $5,000-7,000) - we are offering ours in excellent condition and at a more attractive price. One thing that we are very certain about is that it is a good time to invest in a Hirst edition.
Last but not least with the Shark Week ending in April, we hope your dad became more appreciative of those misunderstood prehistoric mammal. Longo found inspiration for the shark drawings in popular culture, such as Steven Spielberg's film "Jaws". Among surfers, the "great white" is regarded a "Perfect God" – a mysterious force from the sea, that unites fascination and horror - as seen here with Longo´s edition depicting Bruce, 2014 (from the Perfect Gods series).
