The sixteenth edition of ZⓈONAMACO México Arte Contemporáneo and the ninth of ZⓈONAMACO Diseño will gather more than 180 galleries and exhibitors from 22 countries of America, Europe, and Asia.

The most important art fair in Latin America introduces its list of selected exhibitors for its 2019 presentation, which will be held from February 6 to 10 in Centro Citibanamex, Mexico City. It will showcase historic modernist works, contemporary pieces by artists from all around the world, as well as special edition and collectible design objects.

'For this new edition, we are proud to welcome new galleries and galleries that are back with us. Tania Ragasol (Artistic Director of ZⓈONAMACO) and the selection committee chose the galleries for the General Section and Modern Art. Kiki Mazzuchelli (São Paulo, 1972) will once again be the curator of ZⓈONAMACO SUR; this time focusing on the "performative". Furthermore, José Esparza Chong Cuy (Mexicali, 1984) will be the curator of NEW PROPOSALS for the first time. We will also present SAMPLE, an exhibition curated by him that will take place in the fair's lounge', comments Zélika García (Founder of ZⓈONAMACO) regarding the novelties of the coming edition.

Besides its interesting and extensive list of exhibitors, ZⓈONAMACO will include a strong conversations program with the participation of international guests; a section for specialized books and publishers; an area of art books called ZⓈONAMACO Books, and a vast program of activities parallel to the fair–including exhibitions in the most important galleries and museums of the country.

For its sixteenth edition, ZⓈONAMACO becomes established as the top art fair in Latin America with the biggest presence worldwide, creating a space for great art professionals and collectors to gather and to receive more than 60 thousand visitors.

NEW PROPOSALS

Curator: José Esparza Chong Cuy (Mexicali, 1984).

The section will present artistic practices that, as the title suggests, aim to change frameworks. Rather than focusing on the time-based definition of “new,” this section will showcase work by artists that points towards imaginative and experimental ways of living and thinking.

ZⓈONAMACO SUR

Curator: Kiki Mazzucchelli (São Paulo, 1972).

Following up on “The Logic of Materials” –the 2018 edition of ZONAMACO Sur, which focused on contemporary artists’ renewed interest in materiality, the proposal for this edition will once again be framed as an attempt to ‘take the temperature of art world’ by examining yet another recent trend in artistic practices; this time with a focus on the idea of the ‘performative’.

The term ‘performative’ is used here not in opposition to ‘performance’, but rather as indicative of the growing interest, amongst younger generations of artists, to embrace elements of performance in their repertoire, often presented alongside or combined with installation, painting, photography, sculpture.
