About
The Bowery Gallery is a co-operative gallery located in Chelsea in New York City. The gallery is incorporated as a non-profit organization of representational and non-representational artists. Exhibitions change on a monthly basis, featuring artist members and invitationals.
In 1969, a group of 18 adventurous young New York artists, looking around the contemporary art world and thinking back to the 10th Street days of the 1950s, founded a new coop gallery, located on the Bowery which gave the space its name. In 1972 the gallery moved to Greene Street, in 1980 to Wooster Street, and in 2000 to its present space on 25th Street in Chelsea. From its beginnings, the gallery has been a force for the expansion of art's traditions in a venue unconstrained by commercial pressures. Our exhibitions have received notice in The New York Times, Art in America, Modern Painters, ARTnews, Artcritical.com, Vogue, The New Criterion, The New York Sun, The Observer, and The New Republic. Our mission is to exhibit work of the highest quality from independent artists.
