FIRST STREET GALLERY has been inspiring and educating the public, nurturing and challenging artists for over 50 years. As an artist-run gallery, we encourage members to pursue and determine the course of their own artistic careers.
In 1969, FIRST STREET GALLERY opened its doors in Lower Manhattan when the art world was awash in second generation Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art and Minimalism. The founding artists cared little for the seductive imperatives of the time. Instead, they created an artist-run gallery that heralded a return to figuration in painting. Over the years since, we have embraced a vast array of directions, including abstraction. The gallery remains committed to the belief that artists are best qualified to impart direction to every phase of their creative work. The gallery invites applications for membership and reviews submissions monthly. A non-profit since 1981, the gallery's annual juried and invitational programs offer exhibition opportunities for outside artists.
