Tracing the Trail
Still life was, for a crucial period of history, considered inferior to the great
religious and political themes that were developed in painting. Although
the genre was already present in the visual culture of the Egyptians, Greeks
and other civilizations of antiquity, it was in the late Renaissance that it reemerged,
stronger than ever – a period in which different styles began
to pop up across Europe: the vanitas in Dutch painting, the bodegóns in
Spanish painting, the representation of flowers in England, among others.
