AAG Monthly Picks by Dr. Liese Van der Watt

Once a month, we ask a person or collective from our community of collectors, curators, staff, artists, art advisors, art enthusiasts, supporters and friends to pick their five favourites from Afriart Gallery’s available works catalogues. Through this new series, we look forward to offering you different and more personalized insights into our artists’ work, and perhaps to unearth some gems!
It's a new month and once again we are dropping five favourites from Afriart Gallery’s catalogues.
This month, we are pleased to have London-based South African art historian Dr. Liese Van der Watt presenting her selection. Her writing and curatorial projects consistently aim to centre Contemporary African artists with her perspective always positioned in the "South" - defined as politics not geography. Recent curatorial projects include a retrospective of artist Bearnie Searle at Norval Foundation in Cape Town in 2023, and currently an exhibition entitled "We, the People: 30 years of Democracy in South Africa" also at Norval Foundation until November 2025.
