In this catalogue of works featuring various artists and mediums, resides a common throughline of liveliness, seasonality, and metamorphosis. Fragmented figures and landscapes come together to create a tangible semblance of Springtime verve as we make our annual transition from the Winter season here in Melbourne, Australia.
'My main inspiration comes from what is directly around me... I remember combinations of colours I see in houses, pictures, gardens, buildings or sculptures here and round the world.' - Cressida Campbell
Reflecting on the shifting seasons invites artists and collectors alike to bask in the physical and emotional changes present in our daily lives. Inciting us to explore the interesting and unexpected ways seasonality and ripeness can manifest in our lives. Although spring is heavily tied to birdsong and blooming flowers, we can draw inspiration for transition and change from a multitude of sources. Discerning this richness in art is a truly meditative exercise. Perhaps it’s best for us all to savour the ripeness in our own lives.
'Resting,' Anne Marie Hall
Transition is felt not only in the scenery around us, but in our daily lives. An evolving sense of self or transient feelings are a natural consequence of life. Anne Marie Hall personifies this best. In Resting she depicts a figure tenderly reclining against plumes of red, yellow, indigo and brown ink. The abstract feminine is here both sublime and hazy, speaking to a tentative sense of resolution and renewal.
'Yellow Leaves, Alexandra Parade,' Clarice Beckett
In Yellow Leaves, Alexandra Parade a sense of the ‘quiet life’ is captured through the verdant trees and simplistic figures. Here, Clarice Beckett reflects on the ways that our senses and memories receive spring– situating us in a lingering moment in time.
'Reeds,' Lin and Tiriki Onus
Infused with a quietude and a bated temporal stillness, Lin and Tiriki Onus’ collaborative piece Reeds reflects on the natural condition. Their usage of verdant greens and ripe indigoes harkens to a cool Australian afternoon, in the midst of Springtime. Given that the reed ‘sings’ when the wind blows cascading ripples are present in the screenprint, taken to symbolise the power of the wind. The reed also symbolises fertility, protection, and love.
