With the US of A rising to superpower status in the 20th century, its banner turned into an unchallenged iconic and emotionally charged symbol that has been firing up artists imaginations ever since - and the forthcoming 5th of November will show if the connected values are in desperate need of some serious readjustment once again.
Now “Common Flag“ is showcasing 50 highly personal interpretations on the mystique of the Star-Spangled Banner created by some of the most renowned talent today’s art scene has to offer. The artworks on display were created between 2004 and 2024. And even though they obviously differ in terms of execution and format - from original paintings on canvas over screen prints to original drawings and sculptures - they share significant common ground: these striking embodiments do not only pay testimony to the wildly varied and distinct aesthetics that street art has given rise to but also work as an investigation of ambivalence towards the almost overwhelming power of the American Flag and its implied cultural and political system.
