From the height of the Enlightenment in the early 18th century, life was no longer characterized by the strict shackles of the fear of God; instead, everyone was free to develop their own ideas. This led to a new perception of nature, which was characterized by admiration and respect. Well-known nature poets such as Salomon Gessner and Albrecht Haller became bestsellers with their idylls and alpine poems. This awareness was further strengthened in the Romantic period that followed.
The rise of tourism in the 18th and 19th centuries led to a boom in landscape and genre painting in Switzerland. This was the reason for the success of a group of artists who are known today as the “Swiss minor masters”.
