An exhibition of rebellion, the artworks of “Off The Wall II” refuse to conform to the planar surfaces of standard architecture. Works by Louise Blyton play with existing lines by wrapping around doorways and sinking into corners. Heather Hutchison’s box-forms confuse spatial sense by capturing and diffusing the changing light of day through layers of manipulated plexiglass. A complex system of paper hinges allows Mark Pomilio’s geometric drawings to inhabit multiple angles of viewership on a surface that pitches and recedes. George Thiewes explores shadow as a sculptural medium, creating angular steel forms that interact with their surrounding space and shape-shift as the atmospheric light changes in intensity, temperature and direction. Also in steel, but in a wholly different aesthetic, Jeremy Thomas' peaked wall-works pop out in delightfully ostentatious color, form, and sheen. And the art of Jan Maarten Voskuil purses, puckers, and peels itself away from gallery walls as architectural constructions that are at once painting and sculpture. Each work in this collection invites site and context to the conversation while bucking the standards and expectations of how art presents itself.
