Focusing on subjects depicted in moments of waiting, Twenty-six days a year captures the understated moments in life, often spent alone and almost immediately forgotten. This is the first exhibition to examine the theme of waiting in Cameron’s practice which is characterised by figurative paintings depicting everyday scenes of people in the city.
Having been coined the ‘Edward Hopper for the iPhone era’ (Scott Reyburn, The Art Newspaper), Thomas Cameron depicts city scenes which convey the dichotomy between togetherness and isolation in urban environments. Motifs such as shop windows, delivery drivers and pedestrians appear as signifiers for the fleeting and often anonymous encounters that underpin city life. Often observed from a distance, the individual identities of his subjects are obscured to allow space for contemplation and open narrative. Cameron presents the viewer with universal glimpses into contemporary life and the way our time is commodified.
