Manzur’s legacy is one of introspection and spiritual engagement, shaped by decades of study and creation. His art reflects a deep pursuit of serenity and meaning, defining both his personal and creative life.
David Manzur works with the freedom that comes from his extensive and prolific career. He is fully aware of the achievements in his work and unwavering in his artistic convictions, never doubting the aesthetic values he pursues.
David Manzur is known for his great restraint, discipline, and rigor, qualities that are evident in his artistic work. His approach to expressing ideas is both emphatic and measured, creating a discourse marked by notable conceptual clarity. Manzur draws inspiration from a wide range of sources, from which his genius is nourished, resulting in a body of work that encompasses and reflects the richness of universal art history. The essence of his thought is embodied in his drawings, where he executes quick and calligraphic strokes, holding meanings accessible only to him. This creative process leads to the distinctive element of his unmistakable style. It may take him a month to refine what he has sketched, and transforming these sketches into formal drawings or paintings involves a meticulous process of craftsmanship. For Manzur, art is not simply an imitation of reality but an equivalent that explores and reveals the inner substance the artist uncovers. In this context, in 1988, the Museum of Modern Art presented the engraving book El beso de Dios, which features 16 etchings and 6 lithographs, accompanied by texts by Juan Gustavo Cobo Borda. This book is inspired by the mysticism of Saint Teresa of Jesus, a central figure in Christian spirituality and mystical literature. Through his engravings, Manzur explores and visualizes the mystical experiences of Saint Teresa, deeply capturing the intensity of her devotion and her spiritual connection to the divine. The illustrations in "El beso de Dios" visually represent the ecstatic states and visions of the saint, conveying both the passion and the ecstasy of her religious life. The collaboration with Cobo Borda adds a literary dimension to the work, making the book a dialogue between image and text. Thus, "El beso de Dios" stands as a testament to David Manzur's extraordinary artistic vision and his deep commitment to mysticism. Throughout his career, Manzur also founded the Taller David Manzur, which operated for over 20 years, training several generations of artists through audiovisuals and information on classical and contemporary art, further solidifying his legacy in the art world.
