"My art is a dialogue with the human condition, exploring our internal struggles and battles. Through painting and sculpture, I aim to create pieces that invite reflection and connect deeply with the viewer."
On October 3rd, Spanish-Guinean artist Chidy Wayne, who has been based in Barcelona for over a decade, returns to the city with a new selection of pieces from his main series Ego, Pugna, and Pugnator, which will be showcased at Escat Gallery.
Following an important year of international expansion, with exhibitions in cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Brussels, this exhibition represents a homecoming for Wayne. It offers an opportunity to experience his latest creations firsthand.
Wayne's artistic language revolves around painting, though he also explores other media and techniques such as sculpture and printmaking. Through his work, Wayne is known for delving into human and existential themes, encouraging personal reflection for those who engage with his pieces.
His intrinsic curiosity about the human experience has naturally guided Wayne towards figurative art, allowing him to translate his narrative into paintings, prints, and large-scale sculptures alike, always driven by an understanding and conceptualization of the human body.
Although his artistic talent began with a childhood passion for illustration, Wayne has developed his distinctive style through personal and professional evolution, cultivating art as a necessary form of self-expression.
With the return of the SWAB Art Fair to Barcelona from October 3rd to 6th, the walls of Escat Gallery will transform into a stage that invites the public to immerse themselves in Wayne’s creative universe.
Pau Escat, founder of Escat Gallery and curator of the selected works for SWAB, admits that he felt a personal connection the moment he discovered Wayne's work in person. “Visiting Chidy's studio and seeing his new work up close was a revealing experience. His passion for detail and his ability to capture the essence of the themes he explores... it's fascinating. We are excited to share these works with the SWAB audience.”
Escat further explained that the gallery's mission goes beyond mere curation; they see art as a powerful catalyst for introspection and understanding of contemporary themes and the human experience.
With his ability to challenge conventions and his ever-evolving artistic vision, Chidy Wayne continues to establish himself as a relevant voice in the current art scene. This exhibition promises to be one of the highlights of the SWAB fair, garnering interest from collectors, critics, and art lovers alike.
