Explore the groundbreaking world of Excursion N-Harmonique, an exhibition showcasing the visionary work of Manfred Mohr, pioneer of generative art. Since 1969, Mohr has fused algorithmic precision with artistic expression, creating stunning digital compositions that push the boundaries of geometry and abstraction. This exhibition at Galerie Charlot presents a journey through his evolving exploration of the hypercube, revealing the complex beauty of computer-generated art.
Manfred Mohr, born in 1938 in Pforzheim, Germany, is a trailblazer in the field of algorithmic and digital art. His work is the product of a creative journey that began with abstract expressionism in the 1960s and shifted toward a more mathematical and computational approach after his introduction to French computer music composer Pierre Barbaud. This pivotal moment in 1969 marked the beginning of Mohr's exploration of generative art through the use of algorithms and computers, creating one of the earliest examples of computer-generated art. During his time in Paris, Mohr gained access to the computer and high-resolution plotter at the French National Institute of Meteorology. Here, he developed groundbreaking generative drawings during off-hours for over a decade, between 1970 and 1983. His research during this period led to his seminal solo exhibition at L'ARC, the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, in 1971. This exhibition marked the first instance where a museum hosted a solo show of entirely computer-generated art, making it a key moment in the history of contemporary art. Mohr's generative works are rooted in geometric abstraction, driven by his fascination with logical structures and the aesthetic potential of algorithms. His exploration of the hypercube—a multidimensional geometric shape—became a central motif in his career, as he created compositions that abstract, dissect, and manipulate its form across both two-dimensional and three-dimensional planes. Throughout his career, Mohr has been celebrated in numerous retrospectives, including at prestigious institutions such as the Wilhelm Hack Museum, ZKM, and Kunsthalle Bremen. His work is housed in major public collections, including the Centre Pompidou, the Whitney Museum, and ZKM Karlsruhe. In addition, he has participated in key international exhibitions such as New Tendencies 5 in Zagreb (1973), Construction in Process in Lodz (1981), and the Museum of Modern Art in New York (1980). As a pioneering figure in generative art, Mohr’s work continues to evolve, reflecting a deep connection between technological advancement and artistic creativity. His upcoming exhibition, Excursion N-Harmonique, at Galerie Charlot, offers a unique opportunity to explore his work spanning over five decades, highlighting the enduring relevance and influence of his practice in the context of contemporary digital art.
