MA, Desheng ( 马德升 ) was born in 1952 in Beijing and has lived and worked in Paris since 1986.
MA Desheng is a painter, sculptor and poet.
MA Desheng is self-taught, he started as a wood engraver, one of the oldest printing methods in the world, in China. He was refused entry to the Beijing Central Academy of Fine Arts.
Along with Wang Keping, Huang Rui, Zhong Acheng, Yan Li and QU Leilei (gallery artist), he is a founding member of the Xingxing (Stars) group, one of the post-Maoist dissident art movements (joined by 23 artists such as AI Wei Wei). MA Desheng is the spokesperson. This movement was noticed by the authorities but above all by the numerous public for these 2 pioneering exhibitions of contemporary art outside the walls of the Beijing museum.
