Steve Banks

"My artwork is about finding meaningful identity and individuality within popular culture. I strive to make energetic images that explore our relationships and interactions with what is precious, beautiful, necessary, serious, sensual, and non-sensical, through juxtapositions of disparate materials, clashing iconography, pungent color schemes, contrasting textures, scale, and, simplicity versus clutter." - Steve Banks
"The world of American artist Steve Banks is that of Star Wars, Dunkin Donuts, McDonalds and comic strips." - Rob Perree
Through dimensional layers of text, image, iconography, color, and textures, Steve Banks creates timeless portals into pop culture and "accumulated cultural deposits." With references to sub-Saharan Africa and pre-Columbian cultures, folk art, and German expressionists contrasted by scenes of fast food, booming cities, gears, and consumerism, Banks' work becomes akin to that of a comic strip. A cluster of both relatable and provoking imagery, adorned onto canvas through layers of sculptural media.
