Tom Huck: American Dream

Tom Huck: American Dream

Tom Huck is modern master of the wood block print technique. His art captures satirical scenes of everyday life imbued with sex, gluttony, and brutishness in an irreverent yet insightful commentary on our times. His work is included in collections all over the world, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Art Institute of Chicago and The Whitney Museum.
Something gets to be controversial for two reasons: Either it is blasphemously untrue to the point of insult, or its so unapologetically true that it brings to the surface the darkest and most shameful realities of our collective consciousness. Either way the thing about controversy is that it always ends up in a direct confrontation of our beliefs and fears. This dynamic is vividly embodied in the work of artist Tom Huck. Through his bold woodblock prints, Huck blurs the lines between reality and fiction, drawing parallels that provoke thought and reflection. His satirical pieces, inspired by the American Midwest and contemporary sociopolitical issues, provide insightful commentary on our times. Furthermore, Huck’s work draws inspiration from his references, mainly renaissance masters such as Albrecht Dürer whom he cites as a "print hero". Other influences include José Guadalupe Posada, Honoré Daumier, and William Hogarth. Huck adds upon the technical dialogue started by the previously mentioned artists and innovates it through a playful and comical lens reminiscent of popular media such as comic books and comic strips. Tom Huck has mastered the use of irony in his diverse body of work, particularly through the juxtaposition between the fragility of the medium and his process against the roughness of his content, resulting in work that is comical yet piercing and true. Tom Huck’s work can be found throughout some of the most prestigious art collections of our nation such as: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Whitney Museum of American Art, and The Art Institute of Chicago. Today our team at Gallery Victor is proud to announce that we’ll be hosting Tom Huck’s first show in Chicago in over 20 years.
