The installation, titled ‘Untitled (Iterations)’, consists of 92 paintings, each measuring 65 x 50 cm. The theme of this installation revolves around Boogers' heritage, as he has an Indonesian mother and thus grew up between two cultures. With this work, Boogers personally delves into the theme of immigration and cultural blending, building on his installation ‘Retelling’, which was exhibited at Art Rotterdam and acquired by Museum Voorlinden. As a visual starting point, Boogers selected five black-and-white photos from family albums of relatives he barely knew or never met. Details from these photos serve as the subjects of the individual paintings. By isolating, repeating, and working out these details in various colors, a dynamic visual contemplation of his background emerges, where he shares his experience of growing up between two cultures. Boogers engaged in conversations with his Indonesian grandparents, who gradually shared what their lives were like at that time. This is not a given within the Indonesian community, as many adhere to the ‘Indisch zwijgen’ (Indonesian silence). It has become clear that this silence mainly arose because they were not heard at the time. This installation exposes Boogers' urge and urgency to understand this somewhat obscured history and culture, both visually and content-wise. Additionally, feelings of sentiment for a culture that is gradually disappearing inspired him to embark on this project.
