Keith R. Breitfeller
Keith R. Breitfeller was born and raised in Catasauqua, a small town in eastern Pennsylvania, in 1952. He proceeded to attend Kutztown college, studied with New York Artist; Marion Pinto. He also studied at the Barnstone Studio. Keith’s work has been influenced by the impressionist, modernist, and pointillist. He uses figure to ground relationships to deliberately confuse the subject matter, allowing the viewer to find, him or herself, in the artwork.
"I've forever been fascinated with color. It's chameleon nature, it's dependencies on it's surroundings and light. Our perception of color is fragile. But like any good relationship, worth exploring."
"As a color field artist, I delve head first into these chromatic phenomena.
My mentor, Myron Barnstone, based his teachings on Impressionism. He used the Fletcher system to teach color theory, very Impressionist-based. His exercise's involved mixing color and using small dabs of paint to create color transitions that explore intensity, saturation, and value. This was the inspiration for the basis of my paintings."
About His Process
"I've since moved away from a strict adherance to the Fletcher System. However, my work remains carefully considered. Before the dabbed graduations, I make the acrylic underpainting. They are spontaneous and exceptionally adventurous. But in that freedom, I always think of what I have planned for the over-painting. With the under-painting in place I begin, one dab at a time, line after line, layer after layer."
