One of the questions I am occupied with is how to break up the automatic understanding of the visual. The image unites, and I am constantly breaking it up by adding in more figures, plants, lines and scribbles.
Sara Benninga's works explore mental processes through the complex relationships between her figures, often depicted upside-down or intertwined. These figures evoke layers of emotional tension and unresolved internal dialogue.
Benninga's paintings vary in tone, from dark, monochromatic schemes to vibrant fluorescent hues, conveying a sense of chaos and inner turmoil. These bold color choices reflect the tension and dynamism present in her work, emphasizing an underlying sense of psychological and emotional discord. In some pieces, figures interact in ambiguous ways, seemingly touching or merging with one another, deepening the viewer’s engagement with the intricacies of the human psyche.
Alongside her larger, more complex compositions are smaller, intimate portraits of slumbering women. These close-up, tranquil depictions introduce a quieter, dreamlike quality to the exhibition, offering viewers a more introspective and psychoanalytic perspective on the themes of healing, reflection, and inner life. Through her art, Benninga not only explores the boundaries of physical and emotional interaction but also reflects on the power of painting as a space for personal and collective exploration.
