Kathryn MacNaughton’s abstract canvases are characterized by bold brushstrokes that are never random. The masterful control of materiality and the spontaneity of forms are key elements that we wish to highlight in her work, showcasing an impeccable blend of technical precision and expressive freedom.
Kathryn MacNaughton’s abstract canvases are defined by firm and deliberate brushstrokes that are never random. The artist’s mastery over materiality and the spontaneity of forms are key attributes that are clearly evident in her work. The Canadian artist prioritizes the precise application of color, often enhanced by black lines that accentuate the structure and character of her compositions. Kathryn MacNaughton (Canada, 1985) creates abstract paintings that serve as true compositional and material experiments. After graduating from the Ontario College of Art and Design in 2007, she now lives and works in Lisbon, Portugal. Each of her pieces represents a visual journey and a new discovery, where the interplay of color, movement, and form creates a unique aesthetic experience. The painting process is central to her practice: she combines impeccable rigor in material manipulation with an intrinsic spontaneity in form, resulting in works that, while contemporaneous and timeless, offer a captivating paradox of flatness and sculptural quality, complexity and uniformity, stillness and vibrant dynamism. MacNaughton primarily uses acrylic paint, yet her graphic compositions, with defined contours, often evoke cut-outs or digital collages. Since 2010, she has exhibited her work in Canada, London, and New York, with recent collaborations including prestigious names such as Bailey Nelson, Kit and Ace, and the Gardiner Museum.
