Rebekah Andrade’s practice, explores the intricate language of abstract painting, navigating through the diverse realms of expressionism, geometric abstraction, hard-edge techniques, and pattern. Rebekah’s interest lies in exploring the notion of what constitutes an intriguing painting and the amount of information required to captivate the viewer's attention. She is particularly drawn to the concept of reductive painting, wherein she commences with bold, vivid strokes and gradually overs up the past layers to extract a minimalist image. This process serves as a catalyst for introspection, prompting her to investigate questions surrounding the history of representation, the boundaries of perception, and the intricate interplay of aesthetics, status, and image reproduction. Through her work, she aspires to provide insight and clarity into our contemporary visual culture and communication trends, offering viewers a window into the complexities of the human experience Rebekah Andrade is based in Charlotte, North Carolina. How has moving to a new city affected your work?
Relocating has deeply influenced my creative process. My former city lacked visual stimulation but provided room for experimentation with materials and larger compositions. In contrast, my new city is lush, green, and diverse, offering limitless inspiration. This vibrant setting promotes outdoor exploration and cultivates a strong sense of community. This newfound connection and inspiration are vital to my creative process, infusing my work with renewed energy and perspective.
What themes does this work explore, beyond mere reflection?
This work explores the interplay between community and environments. Central to it is the sense of belonging nurtured by community. I'm captivated by how people navigate shared spaces, seen during my morning walks with my dog. Additionally, my art explores how natural and urban landscapes influence our connections and interactions, revealing the dynamic interrelationship between individuals and their surroundings.
How does the work prompt viewers to explore freedom?
My current work prompts viewers to ponder freedom from a personal and abstract perspective. Abstract forms, patterns, and shapes resonate, evoking emotions and fostering intuitive connections. Titles subtly guide, hinting at themes that encourage viewers to define freedom for themselves. This blend of abstraction and suggestive titles fosters introspection, inviting viewers to interpret and explore the concept of freedom through their individual viewpoints and life experiences.
How does the work balance movement and stillness?
Achieving balance with my paintings involves a patient approach. The process challenges me to resist acting on every creative impulse and instead to refine ideas until one effortlessly feels right. This method, initially frustrating, has grown on me. Each piece is now crafted with meticulous care, guided by a sense of ease and effortlessness that emerges when a work truly resonates.
How do these paintings balance contentment amid change?
These paintings show that contentment means finding peace within complexity, not avoiding it. They reveal moments of serenity among vibrant colors with intricate layers and textures. By prompting viewers to engage thoughtfully with details and hues, I seek to cultivate appreciation for the present and gratitude amidst life's uncertainties. This approach aims to inspire a sense of peace and fulfillment in those who encounter the artwork.
