"I have strong roots and I’m attached to Iran so, I wanted to introduce my culture into my paintings"
-Abol Atighetchi
Abol Atighetchi is an Iranian artist, based in Dubai, deeply influenced by Persian culture. His art reflects his journey across the globe, having lived in Iran, the United Kingdom, the United States, France, and finally returning to Iran. Throughout his travels, Atighetchi has developed a unique artistic voice that interprets various cultures and historical events. His artistic evolution has taken him from figurative art to calligraphy and, ultimately, to minimalism.
Atighetchi spent years exploring figurative painting, and in 1996, he found new inspiration in his Persian roots and the works of the poet Rumi. This led him to delve into calligraphy, integrating Persian culture more deeply into his art. His works are characterized by bold use of color, large dimensions, and intricate compositions, often incorporating lines, dots, and decorative elements that add depth and texture to his pieces.
One of the most intriguing aspects of Atighetchi's work is the absence of preparatory sketches. The artist admits that he often doesn't know what his paintings will look like until they are finished, which is why he titles each piece only upon completion. This approach allows him to create with emotion and spontaneity, resulting in works that are both intuitive and deeply personal.
Les Artistes
Among the paintings in this collection is “Les Artistes.” Abol describes this piece as portraying five artists who are depicted in such a subtle manner that they are difficult to discern at first glance. However, when observed individually, each figure stands out as a separate character, adding a layer of intrigue to the painting.

Atighetchi recalls the immense cerebral energy that surged through him while creating this piece, so much so that he was hospitalized a few days after its completion. He believes this intense experience was a direct result of the creative process involved in bringing this painting to life.

Totême
Another standout piece is "Totême," inspired by American and Canadian culture. This painting is a homage to the rich artistic traditions of North American Indigenous peoples, particularly their ancestral carved wooden poles and paintings. Atighetchi was captivated by the art of these cultures and sought to represent his vision of their profound cultural heritage in this work.

Swaziland
"Swaziland" is a powerful representation of Atighetchi's vision of black Africa. Executed in nearly monochrome black, the painting features sparse yet vibrant colors that symbolize African necklaces and artifacts, creating a striking contrast that highlights the richness of African culture.
