MAY 26TH TO SEPTEMBER 2ND 2023 Galerie Polka is pleased to announce the exhibition «Skagen» by Joakim Eskildsen, presented from 26 May to 2 September 2023. «Skagen» is a series by the Danish photographer Joakim Eskildsen, produced in 2008 and presented at Polka gallery from 26 May to 29 July 2023. Located in the far north of Denmark, the town of Skagen is known for its fishing port, old yellow houses and a 46-metre high lighthouse. But this small Scandinavian city also has an amazing particularity: its light, the result of a magical meeting between the North Sea and the Baltic. It fascinated many painters in the 19th century, including Anna Ancher and Peder Severin Krøyer. And one of their greatest admirers: Joakim Eskildsen. “It is essential for me to find a strong interest in the subject I decide to photograph, but light remains a central point in my work.” As time, seasons and the city’s undulating colours go by, Joakim Eskildsen photographs what is emerging before him: portraits of villagers, seashores, deserted buildings. The photographer «sculpts» light in a surreal way, to the point where it seems to merge with that of Flemish painting, which is so singular. I like 15th century painting, the light of a candle. I am attracted by the idea of calm, harmony. There are so few in our present world... It’s in my images because I need it. It’s my therapy.”
