Phillip Thomas' artwork reveals the roots and effects of colonialism in his native Jamaica. With classical techniques and contemporary themes, Thomas explores the relationship of class, culture, race, and perceived status in Jamaica's history and the African diaspora.
With a new collection of small works - portraits of men and women standing in their truth - Phillip reveals a nation's identity expressed as a vibrant yet complex society.
Phillip Thomas examines topics that often go unrecognized both on the canvas and in life. Phillip, who lives and works in Kingston, Jamaica, lets us confront and acknowledge the consequences of colonization which has had a generational effect on black Jamaicans.
Phillip weaves narratives from historical figures and events central to Jamaica and the African diaspora. Despite a history rooted in a plantation economy and colonial rule, Phillip infuses his characters with dignity, elegance, and unabashed Blackness grounded with an indomitable spirit and a sense of belonging.
With a new collection of small works - portraits of men and women standing in their truth - Phillip reveals a nation's identity expressed as a vibrant yet complex society.
