Daiv, The Asian Culture Modernology: 1. Speed

ROY GALLERY is pleased to present The Asian Culture Modernology: 1. Speed, a solo exhibition by Chinese artist DAIV. This show motifs auto racing to reflect political and cultural conflicts in Asia—revealing byway frustrations of actualizing personal dreams and processes of forging new connections through art.
"DAIV's solo exhibition seeks a future in which artists and audiences and can better communicate through physical and online platforms and develop healthier connections despite seemingly superficial or acrimonious qualities of such relationships."
The exhibition provides a dichotomous visual experience of a racetrack through both subjective and objective viewpoints. On the ground floor, structures made of thin plates and wires conceal fragility with splendor—alluding to city billboards and urban development in Asia. This is in stark contrast to the seventh floor with a metaphorical approach of installations that invoke perspectives of the racer.
DAIV’s new series is sourced in his childhood: a friend’s gift of a minicar that inspired the beautiful landscapes of auto races in TV cartoons. He invokes the racecar as a symbol of friendship, but also warns us of betrayal by those closest to us—reflected in the car’s final burn and wreckage in his work, "Roll Up.”
From the artist's point of view, this pessimistic finale holds myriad of implications. Beyond the nations’ struggles with political, social, and cultural differences, DAIV’s works reflect ways in which individual dreams are hampered by social prejudice, and his own personal challenges of being a Chinese artist based in Seoul, South Korea.
