Claudia Renfro: Because They Can
Claudia Renfro: Because They Can
The Painting Center presents Because They Can, a show of work by Claudia Renfro in the Project Room. In this new series, Renfro subverts the traditional craft of embroidery. Drawing with thread, she free hands a perverse and playful world that is populated by characters running wild without restraint. Using a large vocabulary of stitches, she creates from one point—an exaggerated lip or perhaps a tail—until a narrative unfolds.
These characters, sometimes human, sometimes not, develop complicated relationships that dive into the absurd. In each tableau, Renfro captures a moment in this mythic universe that is both exquisite and grotesque.
Claudia Renfro lives in New York, and is a studio artist at The Wilson Avenue Loft Artists in Norwalk, CT. She received her BFA from Cooper Union and has recently shown at The Five Points Gallery, CT LABSpace, NY and The Lockwood Gallery, NY.
