The Painting Center is pleased to present Horizons & Environs, a solo exhibition of recent paintings by Donna Scarpa. This is the artist’s second solo presentation in New York.
In her new body of work, Scarpa furthers her painterly explorations of gestural abstraction, intuitive processes, and transmissions of pictorial light. Vibrant, layered, subtly translucent colors predominate in these compositions, as do broad registers of horizontal gestures merged with lively, dynamic marks and brushstrokes. While conveying ample energy and delight, Scarpa’s paintings invite viewers to settle in and slow down their mode of looking, and to locate the many instances in which her colorful abstractions suggest references to the natural environment.
Trees and soils, atmospherics and light, and skies and celestial bodies are among the artist’s muses in this show. Such subjects appear with an engaging sense of indirect familiarity, implicit and evocative as opposed to exacting. Here, in the ranging environs of her nature-inspired abstractions, is where Scarpa seeks to connect with her viewers, and to join them in glimpsing novel horizons through enlightened lenses.
Horizons & Environs will be accompanied by an exhibition catalogue featuring images of Scarpa’s works and an essay by Paul D’Agostino.
