The Painting Center is pleased to present New and Used Paintings, an exhibition of new work by Galen Cheney. After nearly 10 years, Cheney returns to The Painting Center with a group of bold paintings that pulse with the energy and urgency to meet the current moment. With titles such as All Fours and Twisted Diva the paintings evoke sentient, breathing beings and uncoiling energies that push against the confines of the rectangle. Cheney takes a maximalist approach to getting her point across, slathering oily strokes of saturated color into writhing forms and jittery patterns that float and dive and never keep still. Galen Cheney began her formal painting education at Mount Holyoke College and received her MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art. She was born in Los Angeles though has spent most of her life in New England where she feels a deep connection to her ancestry, the land, and centuries-old architecture. Her work has been exhibited and collected in the U.S., Canada, China, the U.K. and Europe. Past residencies and fellowships include the Millay Colony, MASS MoCA, Vermont Studio Center, Saint-Gaudens National Historic Site, DaWang Culture Highland in Shenzhen, China, and Pouch Cove Artist Residency in Newfoundland (this August). She lives and works in North Adams, Massachusetts.
