Julian Pozzi: Take the Stairs

Julian Pozzi: Take the Stairs

The Painting Center is pleased to present the solo exhibition of Julian Pozzi titled Take the Stairs. Julian Pozzi’s paintings take as their starting point a decades-long practice of drawing. They draw upon disparate sources of inspiration, including architecture, cartoons, and science fiction. They are tied together by a facility to willfully (and gleefully) misrepresent objects, ideas, and people in the service of abstraction.
Pozzi’s line wavers between tenuous and forthright, spidery and solid, and is often used as scaffolding to prop up color and brushwork when it is not simply left to meander and find its own way, at times resolving into pools of color or clumsily colliding with a grid of inexpertly painted squares. Julian Pozzi earned a BFA at the University of Texas at Austin and an MFA at the California Institute of the Arts. He’s had solo shows at 1234 Gallery (LA), Jeff Bailey Gallery (NYC), and Songs For Presidents (NYC). He has had group shows at White Columns and Atelier Cardenas Bellanger (Paris), among other venues. His work has been written about and reviewed in the New York Times and Particules Journal, and he has had residencies at Jentel Artist Residency (WY), SIM Artist Residency (Iceland) and the Vermont Studio Center. He lives and works in Queens, New York. This will be his first exhibition as a member of The Painting Center.
