We believe in embracing human limitations as a source of creative inspiration. Inspiring Limits represents the exploration of the boundless power of art from a fresh perspective.
The conventional journey of discovery through our senses is turned upside down, challenged, and redirected. In short, we redefine the connection between the artwork and the observer.
Art becomes limitless when we embrace human vulnerabilities as a source of strength and creativity.
We believe in embracing human limitations as a source of creative inspiration. Inspiring Limits represents the exploration of the boundless power of art from a fresh perspective. The conventional sensory experience of art is turned upside down, challenged, and redirected. In short, we redefine the connection between the artwork and the observer.
Inspiring Limits is an art exhibition that is not only open and accessible but also a feast for the senses. The artworks show that flexibility arises amidst human limitations and weaknesses. They are not just sources of inspiration but also foster openness and challenge the notion that limitations exist due to personal shortcomings rather than external perceptions.
This sensory awareness exhibition collaborates with contemporary artists to translate the Inspiring Limits vision into artworks accessible to people with disabilities. Artists are encouraged to step outside their usual practices or adapt existing works in new ways for the exhibition.
The Origin of 'Inspiring Limits'
The VCRB Gallery is a contemporary art gallery with a focus on figurative art. Established 23 years ago, it is run by Minneke Van Campen, Erwin Buys, and Louise Buys.
For ten years, Sven Van de Velde handled the gallery’s accounting until he gradually became blind. This ended the collaboration but not the shared love for art. Sven and his wife, Tamara Nolens, turned this challenge into strength, committing to various socio-cultural initiatives and continuing to explore their passion for art.
"Seeing your weakness as an opportunity became our motto when we learned Sven would go blind. We reflected on, ‘What if his eyes could no longer see?’ I often closed my eyes to think with him. It was frightening at first, but soon it became a habit.
We continued visiting museums, closing our eyes and opening our minds. I’d guide his hand to secretly touch oil paint on a canvas and say, ‘Feel and remember.’ We began to see advantages in not seeing—no judgment based on appearances, and a heightened sense of listening, smelling, and feeling.”
