Warhol Treasures: Rare Andy Warhol Works on Paper at Weng Contemporary
"Don't think about making art, just get it done. Let everyone else decide if it's good or bad, whether they love it or hate it. While they are deciding, make even more art." - Andy Warhol
We’re thrilled to share an extraordinary addition to our collection – five original drawings by the iconic Andy Warhol. These rare and captivating works represent an intimate glimpse into Warhol’s creative genius. From vibrant collages to delicate graphite sketches, each piece tells a unique story and embodies Warhol's timeless artistry.
Red Love, 1983
Paper collage made of coloured papers and screen printing ink
The work is one of 8 experimental collages from the estate. The works are based on photographs by Andy Warhol and are the original forerunners of the later print works from 1983. The sitters are Jay Shriver, Warhol's assistant at the time, and the artist's personal trainer, Lydia Cengic.
Madonna with Child
Graphite drawing on firm laid paper
The graphite drawing reflects Warhol's interest in religious themes, particularly evident in his later works such as "The Last Supper" series.
Campbell's Tomato Soup, to Tonia/P,1975
Felt-tip pen drawing and ink on cream wove paper
The drawing features Warhol's signature at the bottom and a dedication "to Tonia and Rob" at the top. The drawing is on the printed title page of "The Philosophy of Andy Warhol (From A to B & Back Again)." Warhol's "Campbell's Soup" series, initiated in the early 1960s, is among his most iconic works, symbolising the intersection of art, consumerism, and mass production.
Bouquet of Flowers, ca 1974
Graphite drawing on parchment paper
This particular drawing may possibly have been a preparatory work for the "Flowers" series, which is one of Warhol's most famous, featuring vibrant, stylized depictions of flowers.
James Dean, ca. 1985
Felt-tip drawing on heavy paper
This felt-tip drawing, measuring 35.3 × 59.5 cm, depicts the iconic actor James Dean. It was a preparatory drawing for the Japanese ads series "Andy Warhol, Andy Warhol Rebel without a Cause (James Dean), from the Ads Series, 1985". Warhol's fascination with celebrity culture is well-documented, and he created several works featuring James Dean.
